Shushtar which is a city located in the north of Khozestan province is
one of the old and ancient cities of Iran. Many ancient relics and old objects have been found from different parts of Shushtar such as Fedelak, Gelalak, Dastoova, Askar Mokram (Rost Qobad,-Rostam Kovaz), Gotvand and Aghili and so on which shows the very significant position of Shushtar in the ancient times. After the arrival of the Muslim Arabs, Shushtar maintained its status as the state capital of (Koreh, Khoreh) Khuzestan province. At the time of the Islamic conquests, Shushtar was considered as one of the main centers of Iranian resistance against the onslaught of the Arabs. Due to the geographical conditions of Shushtar, possessing Salasel fortress (castle) (the ancient name of the castle was forgotten in the Islamic period), having deep ditches and lots of fences as well as because of the courage and bravery of the commander of Shushtar, Hormuzan, the conquest of Shushtar took about two years. Baraa bin Malik Ansari was the first commander of the armies of Islam, after his killing, Abu Musa Ash’ari, became the commander of the Muslim Arabs. The current study attempts to answer the question of the factors which caused Shushtar to be considered as one of the main political centers in Khuzestan province during considered times in the history. The main hypothesis is that in the political history of Shushtar geographical location and military position of Shushtar as well as the existence of the fortified castle of Salasel had caused this city to be considered an important city. Moreover, these factors not only have some impacts on the political situations of Shushtar, but also these factors led Shushtar to be considered as the center and capital of the province of Khuzestan.
